M is for Modelling

“If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want, and copy what they do” – Tony Robbins

Modelling is the most important element of NLP.  In truth for me NLP IS Modelling. We can use modelling as a way to achieve excellence.

NLP was derived when John Grinder and Richard Bandler modelled excellence and created their own models from it. The way that Richard Bandler described modelling sums it up perfectly “We take the very best of what people do, synthesise it down, make it learnable and share it with others – that is NLP”.

We are always modelling

We start modelling when we first appear in the world because learning anything new is a form of modelling.  We model how to walk and talk, how to socialise and learn. Every behaviour is modelled in some way from someone else; sometimes we model good behaviour and sometimes not so good!

Imagine, a friend or colleague with a specific quality or skill they have that you admire.  Imagine if you could understand what they do when they demonstrate that quality or how they are able to master this skill.  If you could model that and repeat it wouldn’t you want to be able to do that?

If you could widen that to all of your friends and colleagues or an expert in their field; how could that be useful to you?  How much more you could you achieve?

Imagine the possibilities for your business or your team if you were to model the excellent strategies of the best sales people, customer service staff or negotiators.

We call it “Finding the Difference, that makes the Difference”

The skill of NLP Modelling involves:

  1. Identify the skill or behaviour to want to model and from whom
  2. Observe and ask them “How” they do it; what thought processes, what beliefs and values do they hold when doing it.
  3. Test it by putting it into practice.  Does it work for you or does it need adapting?
  4. If it does work, repeat, repeat repeat!
  5. Share it by teaching others

How can this help you?

  • You can learn how to do what you already do well, even better
  • You can achieve success in whatever you want
  • You can discover how to be the best version of you.

Who wouldn’t want that?
